Stella's

Now that our time in Richmond is limited, DLW and I are making a point to explore Richmond's many local restaurants. I wasn't always the "foodie" I am now and we wasted years only eating at national chains. My friend Stanley has volunteered to be our personal Richmond restaurant tour guide and the first stop on the tour was Stella's.
I love these two.... and my romper.
We didn't make dinner plans until Saturday evening and even without a reservation we only had to wait about twenty minutes to be seated at the 'community table.'

Stanley demanded suggested that we be 'fancy' with him and ordered a carafe of the house white wine for the table. I've never ordered wine at a restaurant or been much of a wine drinker but I enjoyed a glass or two with dinner. We toasted to good food and great friends.
Wine & Olive Oil.... Yum.
As an appetizer, I ordered the Hummus and Tabouli with pita bread to share. DLW asked me what Tabouli was and the only answer I could give him was, "it's delicious" so here is a better definition, "a salad of fine-ground bulgur, parsley, tomatoes, green onions, mint, olive oil, and lemon juice."
We also ordered the Lamb Frites- fried potatoes, sliced leg of lamb and onion baked with feta and manouri cheese. Or as Stanley explained it to us common folk, potato wedges with lamb and cheese.
As always I had a difficult time deciding on a dinner on entree and enlisted the help of our server. He 'translated' the menu items for me but kind of made me feel like a ding dong for not knowing the Greek names. I ordered the Artichoke Moussaka or as he put it, "vegetarian Greek lasagna."
Oh.My.Goodness. The moussaka was one of the best dishes I have ordered in a looooong time. The layers of artichoke hearts, potatoes, fennel, caramelized onion and sauteed eggplant were perfectly baked with bechamel (white sauce) and topped with cheese. I didn't feel like I was eating vegetables- it was an indulgent dish that I savored until the last bite. Yum.

We passed on dessert at Stella's but made sure to finished our wine. DLW & I made a 'pact' to only eat at local restaurants when we go out to dinner from now until we move (however, we might have to grab Mexican a few times because it's my fav). I am looking forward to more Richmond restaurant experiences and I wished we were introduced to Stella's sooner.
  • Do you eat at mostly chain or local restaurants?
  • Have you ever had moussaka?
  • What is the best dinner entree you have ordered recently?

  1. Oh my! That lasagna looks looks great! I love to cook and have made stuff like that before! I have never thought to put in artichoke! Our town, Pensacola, is pretty "small". Well, at least compared to most.. we try to eat local as much as possibly and there are the cutest places around here with great food-- especially seafood.

  7. We eat mostly at local restaurants too! We're fortunate enough to have a lot of microbreweries & start ups in our area so it makes supporting small businesses pretty easy.

  9. Oh my goodness, moussaka... my mom went through a Greek food phase when I was in high school and to this day, I cannot stand it. We ate it often during that time. :)
